Reading and Phonics

At Edenfield C of E primary school we recognise each pupil’s entitlement to a rich and comprehensive programme of reading which will ensure that each pupil develops an enjoyment of reading through the acquisition of skills, knowledge and conceptual understanding.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • Develop the habit of reading widely and often both for pleasure and for information
  • Acquire a wide vocabulary
  • Appreciate our rich literary heritage
  • Will apply their reading skills to all subjects in preparation for their secondary education
